Should you have to take a date to prom?

Would you go to prom alone?

It’s prom season, which means most high school seniors are stressing to find a prom date. The most frequent asked question around school is “Who are you going to prom with?”

Some questions you may hear is “are you going to prom with a date?” Most people find it weird to go alone. The most stressful part of prom is trying to find a date. Some think its weird to go alone, so instead they just stay home. This to reassure you that going stag isn’t weird at all.

Why you should go to prom alone

I think having a date makes prom so much more stressful than it already is. When you have a date you need to worry about both you AND your date. Prom is a once in a lifetime experience and you want to enjoy your night.  I personally don’t want to worry about my date not having fun or have to worry about staying with them the whole night.

Most people only bring a date because they want to have someone to take pictures with and also someone to slow dance with. As for taking pictures, you don’t need a date for that; instead take pictures with friends. You may not like your date years from now but you’ll be constantly reminded of them every time you see those photos.  On the subject of slow dancing, how often does a DJ really play a slow song? Maybe twice. If a slow number comes on, use that chance to hydrate yourself or take some pictures.  Another option is dancing with friends instead.  What would you do if you date isn’t into dancing? Sitting at the table watching everyone else have fun is not fun at all.

Going to prom alone can be just as much fun. You can go with a group of friends and then there won’t be any awkwardness or stressing. By going alone you won’t be tied down. Sometimes dates don’t want to dance so what do you do when you want to but they don’t? Do you sit there and watch everyone else have fun while you’re a wallflower? Or do you dance alone anyway. Without a date you can decide when to sit or dance. To add, bringing a date can add pressure to impress someone. Also you won’t have to worry about matching anyone.

Fixing the problem

To fix this problem go to prom alone and have the time of your life. Go big and show everyone what they’re missing out on; show them your confidence about going to prom alone. Go with some friends and then hit the dance floor all night.

Movies and society condition people to believe that it is taboo to go alone to a dance. In 2014 about only six percent of students went to prom alone and 94 percent went to prom with a date.  We need to change these numbers because it shouldn’t be odd to go to prom alone. In a poll on twitter put out by Colonia High School about 78 percent of students are going with a date and 22 percent without.

If you’re going to prom alone go and show everyone that you’re having fun without a date. It’s nice to focus on yourself and be confidence in yourself walking in with a beautiful dress on and your hair done all pretty. Change everyone’s thoughts. Go have an amazing time at your prom with or without a date!
